Bialik seeks an Associate Director of General Studies to join our administrative team.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Teaching and Learning, the Associate Director of General Studies provides instructional leadership and administrative support, focusing on student success and teacher development. The successful candidate will ensure high-quality General Studies (GS) education through curriculum oversight, staff supervision and evaluation, professional development, and effective communication with all stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

The Associate Director of General Studies will work closely with Teachers, Vice Principals, Branch Principals, and the Director of Teaching and Learning. The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge and background in Ontario curriculum, curriculum development, and school leadership as outlined below:

Student Advocacy

● Ensure teachers provide for the needs of individual learners

○ Facilitate the provision of resource intervention when needed

○ Help teachers pursue alternative instructional strategies

● Plan with GS support services

○ Provide professional development for General Studies (GS) resource staff

○ Consult, as needed, with support staff, teachers and VP’s to provide for all students’ needs

Supervision and Evaluation of Staff and Instruction

● Work collaboratively with Director of Teaching and Learning to

○ Assess staffing needs

○ Interview and recommend for hiring prospective GS teachers and assistants

○ Assign new GS teachers to classes

○ Assign mentors to new GS teachers

○ Participate in orientation of new personnel

○ Make recommendations regarding extension of teaching contracts and tenure

○ Ensure consistent and high quality evaluation of students

● Guide and supervise new GS teachers in lesson planning and delivery, subject matter, and classroom management

● Supervise & evaluate teaching and learning

○ Visit classrooms and observe teaching and learning on a regular basis

○ Conduct formal evaluations of non-tenured teachers, including pre- and post-observation meetings and written evaluations

○ Conduct formal evaluations of tenured teachers as per school policy (portfolios, traditional evaluations, etc.)

○ Carry out ongoing, informal evaluation of GS teachers

● Collaboratively facilitate teaching/school improvement

○ Establish measurable learning goals for grade levels and subjects

○ Gather and analyze data on achievement of those goals

○ Evaluate student learning outcomes in GS areas

● With the Director of Teaching and Learning, supervise specific grades and the development of the GS curriculum

○ Oversee the review, development and implementation of curriculum

○ Oversee the review, development and implementation of new GS educational programs

○ Explore, evaluate and introduce new trends in education

○ Select textbooks and materials and order/create GS textbooks

● Coordinate the planning of professional development and staff meetings – in consultation with the rest of the Admin Team

○ Plan professional development and staff meetings for the GS teachers

○ Set annual professional development goals

○ Recruit relevant speakers or workshop leaders for PD sessions

○ Evaluate achievement of PD goals

Communication

  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with all stakeholders:
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully in formal and informal settings and assist with resolving conflicts amongst stakeholders as needed

School Management, Organization and Administration

● Work closely with the Director of Teaching and Learning on the following

○ Transform Board policies into practical procedures

○ Formulate evaluation procedures for school personnel

○ Supervise and evaluate instructional programs and processes

○ Supervise and evaluate procedures and outcomes

○ Provide input into the development of the school calendar

● Represent the school in the community

● Create annual PLC meetings and special event schedules

● Supervise GS progress reports

Decision-Making and Leadership

  • Work with Admin Team to establish strategic priorities and develop plans for upholding Bialik’s pillars
  • Participate in the educational budgeting process
  • Facilitate the integration of technology with GS programs
  • Keep abreast of developments and trends in curriculum development and education


Qualifications & Skills

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education (Master’s preferred)
  • Experience in special education, student support services or academic intervention
  • Knowledge of assistive technology tools and UDL principles
  • Excellent communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills
  • Well-organized and detail-oriented


Preferred

  • Experience in social-emotional learning (SEL) and behavioural intervention.
  • Understanding of Responsive Classroom principles and their application in a dual-curriculum setting
  • Understanding of second-language acquisition
  • Experience offering learning extensions for students needing additional challenges
  • Leadership and team management experience
