Some of the sweetest moments at Bialik happen in the hallway.
Not long ago, I overheard a JK student proudly telling a friend all about their Grade 8 buddy. They talked about how nice they were and how much they loved asking them questions about “big kid stuff.” It was such a small interaction, but it captured exactly what makes the JK-Grade 8 Buddy Program so meaningful. These relationships matter deeply to our students.
Our JK-Grade 8 Buddy Program is a cherished tradition that connects students at the very beginning of their journey with those preparing to graduate. What starts as a simple pairing quickly becomes something much more meaningful for both students.
For our Junior Kindergarten students, having a Grade 8 buddy is a very big deal. The Grade 8s are the leaders of the school and spending time with them brings excitement, comfort and a sense of belonging. Our youngest students light up when their buddies come to visit and quickly begin to feel that they have someone older looking out for them.
For our Grade 8 students, the experience offers something just as important. Being a buddy gives them the opportunity to lead with kindness and patience. They take the responsibility seriously and it is always special to watch them step naturally into that role. Many students say the Buddy Program becomes one of the most memorable parts of their final year at Bialik.
Throughout the year, buddy pairs come together for activities connected to Jewish holidays and school traditions. Early in the year, students worked side by side decorating the school Sukkah for Sukkot. During Chanukah, buddies created cards together for our B’nai Brith Tzedakah initiative, helping spread warmth and kindness beyond our school community.
Celebrating Tu B’Shvat, our buddy pairs planted parsley seeds together while learning about growth, renewal and our connection to nature and Jewish tradition. By the time Passover arrives, the parsley is ready to be used as Karpas on the seder plate, giving students a tangible connection to something they cared for together.
In the Spring, buddies decorated sweet Matzah treats before Pesach and the year concludes with a special farewell recess filled with games, laughter and time together before the Grade 8 students graduate.
What makes the Buddy Program so special is not just the activities themselves, but the relationships built along the way. For our JK students, these connections help make school feel warm and welcoming. For our Grade 8 students, it is a chance to reflect on how much they have grown and to leave a positive mark on the students following behind them.
Programs like this remind us that learning is not only about what happens in the classroom. It is also about connection, mentorship and the feeling of being part of a community that cares for one another. The Buddy Program is one of the many ways that spirit comes to life at Bialik, every single year.
